If I were to show you a silk rose, you would undoubtedly conclude that it was a product of intelligence and design, right?

Roses

Now suppose I show you a real rose, one with all the same characteristics of the silk rose, but with all the incredible added systems and technologies that we describe as “life.”

An assessment of the prevailing situation makes it clear that evolution’s assumptions are as much around us as the air we breathe and no more escapable. At the same time theology’s affirmations are being made as responsibly as ever. In this sense both science and religion are here to stay, and the demands of either are great enough to keep most (if not all) from daring to profess competence in both. To preserve their own integrity both science and religion need to remain in a healthful tension of respect toward one another and to engage in a searching debate which no more permits theologians to pose as scientists than it permits scientists to pose as theologians.

The Arthropod Story takes you on a tour through the amazing evolutionary history of arthropods. Along the way, you’ll get a healthy dose of taxonomy, paleontology, natural history and principles of evolution.

Dan Osman

Bears Reach

Call it inevitable that Dan Osman found the fatal edge of his signature sport, a thing known as “free-falling.” But were his leaps of faith – and thus his sad death – as profound as he imagined? Or just stunt taken to foolish extremes?

Video of Dan Osman climbing the Bear’s Reach route on Lovers Leap near Strawberry, California in 4 minutes, 25 seconds.

Climbing sheer rock faces of hundreds or thousands of feet is more a religion than a sport, demanding dedication, patience, mental and physical strength, grace, and a kind of obsession with detail that is crucial just to survive. Its artists are modern-day ascetics who often sacrifice nine-to-five jobs, material goods, and the safety of everyday life to pit themselves and their moral resoluteness against an utterly unforgiving opponent.

Animated Knots

Knot

The Trucker’s Hitch (Lorry Hitch, Haymaker’s Hitch, Harvester’s Hitch) ~ has the distinctive feature of providing a three to one purchase when being tightened. The variety of names for this hitch is a tribute to its widespread use. It is a valuable knot – particularly for securing loads or tarpaulins.

This particular knot is one of my favorites because it acts like a block and tackle, allowing you to tie things down very tightly. I like to end it with a Taut Line Hitch around just one of the ropes. The animation makes it easy to learn.

Bob Carver

BobCarver

Anyone who knows anything about high-end audio has heard of Bob Carver. His innovative designs (particularly dealing with amplifiers and subwoofers) are legendary, and even his early 1970s components are still in demand by audiophiles around the globe.

Bob founded Phase Linear in 1970, then founded Carver Corporation in 1978. He later transitioned out of Carver Corporation to start Sunfire Corporation, which manufactures high-end home theater components. He successfully regained control of Carver Corporation in 1998, and currently runs both companies from a facility in Snohomish, Washington

* Carver preamplifiers had “Sonic Holography”, or interaural crosstalk cancellation.
* Carver amplifiers had Magnetic Field power supplies.
* Carver tuners and receivers had the Asymmetrical Charge-Coupled FM detector.
* Carver “t-mods” were affordable solid-state amplifiers modified to match the sonic character of ultra-expensive high-end amplifiers like Mark Levinson, Conrad Johnson and Carver’s own Silver Seven.

We use the term “70’s Audio” to represent the “mindset” and the well-deserved nostalgia regarding the overall build-quality of mainline consumer audio products that many people think reached a zenith in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Prior to about 1981 or so, most audio gear was not stereo-on-a-chip, light-weight, black-plastic (black plague) boxes.
